TABULA RASA

CREATIVITY BELOW THE ARTIST’S SURFACE

‘Tabula Rasa’—from the Latin meaning ‘scraped table’—refers to the philosophical theory that the human mind begins as a blank slate, devoid of innate ideas, with all knowledge arising from sensory experience and interaction with the external world. In this series, we draw a parallel between the artist's mind and this concept of a blank canvas, using the technique of marbling on fabric as a metaphor for how ideas and creativity are imprinted onto the mind.

‘OFF PRINT’

We begin by exploring the marbling process on paper, experimenting with printing and scanning techniques to recreate the intricate patterns.

‘STONE MARBLING’

Marbling is the art of creating multi-colored, swirling or stone-like patterns by floating vibrant pigments on the surface of a liquid, then carefully laying the fabric onto the surface to absorb the unique designs. In this series, fabric serves as a flexible medium—one that can be bent, manipulated, and draped—allowing the model to interact with it in dynamic and expressive ways.

‘BLANK SLATE’

The shapes and patterns created through the marbling process act as a visual representation of the artist's inner thoughts and emotions, translating them into a visual language displayed on the textile. Each piece is a metaphor for how creativity emerges from the blank slate of the mind, with the marbled fabric symbolizing the process through which ideas are formed, transformed, and imprinted into physical form. The result is a series of works that invite the viewer to reflect on the fluid, ever-evolving nature of creativity itself.
