TABULA RASA

CREATIVITY BELOW THE ARTIST’S SURFACE

Tabula rasa—from the Latin ‘scraped table’—refers to the theory of knowledge, which suggests that the human mind is initially a blank slate, without innate ideas, and that all knowledge is derived from sensory experience and interaction with the external world. In this series, we draw a parallel between the minds of artists and the concept of a blank canvas, exploring the technique of marbling on fabric as a metaphor for how ideas and creativity are imprinted onto the mind.

‘MARBLING’

Marbling is the art of printing multi-colored swirled or stone-like patterns, and in this case, in fabric. The patterns are formed by first floating the colors on the surface of a liquid, and then laying the fabric onto the colors to absorb them.

‘MARBLING’

Marbling is the art of creating multi-colored, swirled or stone-like patterns, and in this instance, it is applied to fabric. The process involves floating vibrant colors on the surface of a liquid and then carefully laying the fabric onto the surface, allowing it to absorb the unique patterns.

‘SET DESIGN’

We used fabric as a flexible medium that can be bent and manipulated, inviting the model to engage with it in dynamic ways. The shapes and patterns created through the marbling technique serve as a reflection of the artist's inner thoughts, translating them into a visual language displayed on the textile.
